Utqiaġvik (Barrow), Alaska (November 15, 2024) – Iḷisaġvik College is thrilled to announce a substantial donation of $296,441.91 from the Lillian DeWitt Annuity Trust, which represents half of a total commitment of $592,883.82 intended for the support of Indigenous education. The total gift is being equally shared with Northwest Indian College in Washington State and is in honor of Lillian DeWitt’s commitment to supporting Tribal colleges and promoting the advancement of Indigenous education.

This generous donation is instrumental in bolstering our mission at Iḷisaġvik College. The funds will be allocated towards supporting academic programs, student services, and enhancing resources that support the holistic success of our students.

President of Iḷisaġvik College, Justina Wilhelm said, “We are profoundly grateful for the support from the Lillian DeWitt Annuity Trust. This generous contribution of $296,441.91 is a vital investment in our future, allowing us to implement meaningful changes and improvements within our educational offerings. The Lillian DeWitt Annuity Trust's decision to donate a total of $592,883.82 to Indigenous higher education reflects an understanding of the crucial role that Tribal colleges play in empowering Alaska Native and American Indian communities through education. The funds received by Iḷisaġvik College will not only facilitate academic advancement but will also help in preserving and promoting Iñupiat culture and language within our curriculum.
