Summer camps are the opportunity of a lifetime for students to experience college campus life, make new friends, explore interesting career fields, and to be immersed in the Iñupiaq culture! Summer camps are free for attendees and, in most cases, travel is paid for students who are outside Utqiaġvik.

OVERNIGHT CAMPS

Overnight camps give students the opportunity to stay in the Iḷisaġvik College residence halls for the duration of the camp. High School overnight camps are open to campers from all over Alaska; Middle School overnight camps are limited to campers from Utqiaġvik.

DAY CAMPS

Day camps are open only to Utqiaġvik residents. Camp will be held in the morning and afternoon, with campers returning home after class.

For a second year, the expedition has been made possible through a collaboration between the North Slope Borough Health Department and NOLS, a nonprofit educational organization that has been facilitating expeditions in remote Alaska for 50 years. NOLS will provide the equipment, enrollment, highly trained instructors, permits, emergency communication and logistics for the expedition. All expenses for participants, including round trip travel from your home community to Utqiaġvik, will be paid by the North Slope Borough.

The expedition will include hiking several miles most days, often with backpacks weighing 35-55 pounds, camping, cooking, navigating, fishing, group decision making, reflecting in beautiful landscapes, and handling whatever challenges Mother Nature gives us. No previous camping experience is needed. A willingness to work as a team and an ability to follow instructions for safety are necessary. This is not a survival trip, a boot camp or a detox program. There will be no drugs, no weapons and no personal phones on the expedition. This will be an opportunity to embrace challenge with highly trained mentorship, to get away from the screens and to develop meaningful skills for life while being part of a positive team culture.

Applications for this camp are due March 30th for first round consideration. Applications received before April 30th may be considered if there is still space.
