OVERVIEW

What is Title IX?

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the 1964 Civil Rights Act

Title IX is most commonly associated with equal opportunity for women in athletics. However, it is so much more than that. Title IX is a federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational institutions receiving federal funding. While the two most common applications of the law are towards athletics and sexual harassment, Title IX also applies to admissions, financial aid, academic matters, career services, counseling, and medical services, and hiring and employment.

All members of the Iḷisaġvik community, guests and visitors have a right to be free from sexual misconduct. Sexual misconduct includes but is not limited to sexual harassment, sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence. If you have concerns or need to report an incident, please contact the Title IX Coordinator or Investigator.

Iḷisaġvik College Statement of Non-Discrimination

It is the policy of Iḷisaġvik College to provide equal education opportunities and to provide service and benefits to all students without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, physical or mental disability, marital status, status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran, or any other basis prohibited by law. Title IX prohibits Ilisaġvik College from discriminating on the basis of sex in any education program or activity, admissions, or employment. Inquiries about the application of Title IX to Ilisaġvik College may be referred to the Ilisaġvik College’s Title IX Coordinator and/or the Assistance Secretary for the Department of Education. 

REPORTING

Iḷisaġvik College has a Title IX Coordinator, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, and a Title IX Investigator to respond to all reports of sexual misconduct. To make a report of sexual harassment, sex discrimination or sexual violence, email titleix@ilisagvik.edu or contact any staff member listed below.

Helpful Information to Share with Survivors of Sexual Assault

  • Survivors can speak with someone at any time. Reporting is always a choice. Choosing one route does not exclude other options. Survivors should pursue whatever routes will be most helpful to recovery, and that pathway may change over time.
  • Confidential support is available through our local North Slope Borough Arctic Women in Crisis Program at 907-852-0261 or Integrated Behavioral Health 907-852-0366.
  • If a survivor wishes to file a criminal complaint, she/he should contact their local police department. Advocates (available through local shelters) and attorneys can accompany survivors.

TRAINING

Iḷisaġvik College is in the process of updating training materials for the Title IX Coordinator, Title IX Investigator, and decision makers. Iḷisaġvik will post links to these materials when they are updated.   

Annual Required Title IX Training for Students and Employees

Iḷisaġvik College uses Vector Solutions Title IX Training for both student and staff annual trainings. To learn more go to vectorsolutions.com.

Your well-being is paramount. In the event you are unable to complete this training due to personal experiences, please fill out a request to be released from the training which will be submitted directly to your Title IX Coordinator. The identifying information you provide will be kept confidential.

Student Training

Safety is a priority at Iḷisaġvik College. Students reach their highest potential when they feel safe and respected. Iḷisaġvik College is committed to providing training to all students and employees to foster respectful and safe classrooms and campuses.

All students are encouraged to take Title IX Training annually. Residential students are required to take the training annually. Training is available through the online training offered through Iḷisaġvik College.

  2. Select training module assigned.

Training Details

  • Training time: approximately 90 minutes. You may work at your own pace.
  • Deadlines will be determined by the Dean of Students and HR Director.
  • Failure to complete the training may affect your ability to register for classes.

Employee Training

Your well-being is paramount. In the event you are unable to complete this training due to personal experiences, please fill out a request to be released from the training which will be submitted directly to your Title IX Coordinator. The identifying information you provide will be kept confidential.

In order for Iḷisaġvik College staff to respond effectively and proactively stop instances of sex and gender-based discrimination, all employees have been designated as responsible employees. Responsible employees must report any sex and gender-based discrimination to the Title IX Office within 24 hours. This includes:

  • Discrimination on the basis of sex or gender identity
  • Sexual harassment
  • Sexual assault
  • Dating and domestic violence
  • Stalking

This training is designed to assist employees with how to recognize and identify sexual discrimination, the various forms of sexual harassment, our commitment to responding to allegations, how to file a report and relevant resources available.
